Obon Bazaar on June 29 and 30

The Lodi Buddhist Church Bazaar committee recently announced this year’s Obon Bazaar will be held on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, at their temple located at 23 N. Stockton Street, Lodi.

For many Japanese American Buddhists, Obon is a time to gather with family and express gratitude to the spirits of their ancestors.

Over many years in the United States, Obon bazaars have evolved into celebrations with traditional Bon Odori (folk dancing). Dancers wearing colorful kimonos or hapi coats circle around a central platform to the accompaniment of live music played on Japanese instruments with vocalists. Everybody is encouraged to join the dancing.

The bazaar features popular Japanese dishes including tempura, udon noodles, teriyaki chicken bowl, curry rice, sushi rice, maki and inari sushi, Spam musubi, teriyaki chicken, yakisoba, and chicken salad. In addition, there will be hamburgers, gourmet snow cones, beers, and sodas.

Entertainment will include Japanese dance performances, exhibits of Japanese dolls, flower arrangements, artwork by local artists, children’s games, and bingo.
